The Tragedy of Julen Lopetegui

LaLiga - Real Madrid: Lopetegui: Yesterday was the saddest day of ...

“Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” These were the infamous words of Brutus in justifying the assassination of Julius Caesar as staged in Shakespeare’s ever classical tragedy – A play delineated by the subterfuge of Cassius, the perfidy of Brutus, and the ultimate quietus of Julius Caesar. In a typical plot of power struggle, Brutus a highly revered confidante of Julius Caesar is manipulated by Cassius and joins the plot to assassinate the ever-popular Roman General, Julius Caesar. In a bizarre turn of events, the action of killing Caesar appears impolitic and futile. Out of frustration and guilt, Brutus takes his own life. From politics to the corporate world, shades of deceit and betrayal abound. Football as a cultural institution is no exception.
Conceptualize being coach of the country renowned for its Tiki-taka brand of football, home to the dynamic duo of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF – a reference point for every club in the world. After an impressive qualifying series (W9 D1), the obvious favorite tag has been bestowed on the team. Your team is seeking to erase the horrors of their previous World Cup appearance whilst concurrently hoping to match the heroics of the much revered 2010 squad. In a move quite reminiscent of the infamous Saipan incident leading to Roy Keane’s departure from the Irish squad on the eve of the 2002 World Cup, Further, visualize getting sacked 48 hours prior to managing your first game at the World Cup. Your transgression? Accepting and signing a contract to manage Real Madrid whiles preparing to lead La Furia Roja to World Cup glory. An approach deemed professionally unethical and an unwanted distraction to an already politically volatile squad (considering the perpetual Catalan/Spain rivalry). The aftereffects of your actions? Spain suffers a disastrous World Cup campaign, bowing out to Russia in the round of 16. Also, 4 months and 17 days into your Real Madrid reign which culminates in the club’s worst start to a league season since the 01/02 season, Real Madrid relieves you of managerial duties.
Welcome to the veridical and unfortunate world of Julen Lopetegui Argote. A man whose fall from the apex of Spain and Real Madrid to the substratum of unemployment within the space of 139 days is self-inflicted and tragic. Questions have been asked about the timing and bizarre decision by Real Madrid’s President, Florentino Pérez to appoint a coach who has had a tepid record managing at club level. In fact, during Lopetegui’s 2-year (2014-2016) stint as manager of FC Porto, the club went trophy-less despite having the biggest ever transfer budget in their history. His greatest spell as a coach was obviously with the national team where he was unbeaten in his 20 games (W14 D6).
Florentino Pérez’s quest to remain competitive at the expense of the success of the Spanish national team by enticing Lopetegui to switch allegiances. A catastrophic move thus far bears a striking semblance to Cassius’ manipulation.
Lopetegui’s gullibility and subsequent betrayal of his RFEF employers and a whole nation are reminiscent of Brutus. A possibility of career suicide stemming from a perpetual hiatus away from the dugout wouldn't be surprising. Perhaps in his defense, he might just say “Not that I loved Spain less, but that I loved Real Madrid more.”

Post Highbury Blues – The Emirates Stadium Mare

The more things change the more they stay the same; an ever-popular phrase often associated with Citizens of countries fed up with the usual rhetoric of political parties in Government and in recent times synonymous with disgruntled Arsenal Fans after a loss or a draw. On 8 th June 2006, Club legend Henry scored the last goal at Highbury courtesy an 81 st minute spot-kick. After 93 memorable years, it was time to bid adieu to the stadium that had given us the double-winning teams, Arsene Wenger, Tony Adams, Liam Brady, George Graham, Dennis Bergkamp and the Invincibles. Like the biblical story of the promise land, the pilgrimage from Highbury to the Emirates was expected to be a dream arcade flowing with milk and honey – a footballing abode of modern standards with the perfect allure of attracting the very best talents to North London whiles competing with other elite clubs for trophies. However, every dream has a price and the beginning of everything is a...

The Beautiful Game: Deceptive Players, Gullible Supporters.

In Shakespeare’s renowned play titled Macbeth, the theme “Fair is foul and foul is fair” resonates throughout one of his finest tragedies. The theme in a literal sense highlights the contradictory nature of situations; things that seem appealing can be deceptive in reality. Three witches vaguely prophesy to Macbeth (by telling him he would become King). He believes it and falls victim to his own ambition thus leading to his ultimate demise. The play manifests the true effects deception and gullibility can have on man. From politics to the corporate world, shades of both abounds. Football as a cultural institution is no exception; In fact it is the perfect litmus test in examining this human phenomenon. Deceptive Players, Gullible Supporters The average career of a professional footballer barring grave injuries lasts around 15 years. From badge-kissing during goal celebrations, to a cheerful phizog when partaking in charitable works on behalf of clubs, footballers sell a fal...

Our World Cup Reckoning: Russia 2018

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, the 1985 hit song of English band Tears for Fears epitomizes what the footballing world is about to witness when the World Cup commences on 14 th June, 2018 .With 32 teams dreaming of ruling the footballing world till at least 2022 , The opening lyrics of the song, “Welcome to your life. There’s no turning back “ paints a picture of the task ahead.Every tournament begets expectations and Russia 2018 is certainly no exception. Will the Guardiola effect propel England to world cup glory 😋 as experienced in his managerial stints at Barcelona (Spain 2010) and Bayern (Germany 2014) ? As far as Ballon D ’or contenders goes, Can the mesmerizing antics of Messi deliver Argentina from Higuaín’s expected mess?   Will the chutzpah of Cristiano Ronaldo help Portugal ? How about Neymar emulating the 2002 Korea/Japan heroics of fellow compatriot  Ronaldo Da Lima ? For a country largely famous for its pyramids than football, can Salah ...
